A few days ago I promised to tell you how much you can do with an iPod Touch (sorry for the delay), and how it is positioned in the market for mobile devices, but after thinking it over, I decided it was best left to the translation an article I wrote some time ago, and I think illustrates very well how much you can do with an iPod Touch. I upgraded to translate some parts. At the end of the article is a link to the original (English):

Let us be clear from the beginning, I’m not the CEO of any company, not the busiest person you could imagine, but like many of us in one way or another I have many things to do during the day, and like many depend heavily on my computer (my MacBook Pro) to achieve them.

And with that, I must admit I am among those who would like to have both an iPhone 3G as an iPod Touch at the same time. I know it’s too much but I like them both greatly. However, since I mobilized mostly on foot, by taxi and combi, having to show an iPhone every time someone calls you is a risk I’d rather not run. So for this and other reasons are compelling too, my iPod Touch portable ended up being my platform of choice, I carry with me all the time.

I did not expect was that in this situation give me a unique opportunity to judge the iPod Touch as a mobile device itself, knowing that there is no 3G iPhone, but has some disadvantages and also has some important advantages on it:
Battery: I can hear music on my iPod Touch most of the day, using WiFi in moderation, watch an occasional video and still make use of other applications I use on a daily basis and still no battery charge my iPod Touch more than once every day or day and a half. One big difference with an iPhone.

Accessibility: These days all you need to get an iPod Touch is a little over $ 200 or $ 250 and mobility to the store, mall or wherever you go shopping. No contracts, no monthly fees of 200 soles (or more), no cumbersome commitments. Once you buy, you are ready o be used.

Power: A little known fact but the iPod Touch is the most powerful handheld device with which Apple has, since it has a 532 MHz processor, much faster than 412 MHz processor that the iPhone 3G uses.

And it’s worth. No need to tell you what the iPhone means for the mobile phone market, but what causes it and the iPod Touch do “click” for me and for many users worldwide is the App Store . This little monster that already has over one thousand million downloaded applications can return to your iPhone / iPod Touch at (almost) anything you want.

So to prove my point better then I leave you with a day in the life of your server, and as my iPod Touch (iPod only from now on) helps me do things in a much more rapid, organized and efficient:

I wake up at 8 am to sound the alarm on my iPod (very strong and effective by the way). I use the Pocket Informant to see the commitments that I have and the tasks that I have to fulfill. Then turn on my Macbook Pro to sync some playlists to do yesterday, plus a couple of games I want to try and some files I’ll need later, which synchronize via Air Sharing.

I forgot to download my email to my iPod so I make sure I do before leaving. In the taxi I listen to some music while I check my email and write the first lines of this article in the Notes (which will send email to my Mac later.) Later I met with two friends not seen for years so I take this opportunity to update their information in my Contacts, and continued talking and joking while they show me where they live in Google Maps and my friend shows me a video of his daughter one year old on Youtube.

We go to a Starbucks is nearby to buy some Frappuccino and take advantage of the WiFi to connect and see the bill as we go to the movies then also download my email and some articles of the blogs to which I subscribe. As we finished our respective Frappuccino, I seek the direction of Agent Apple Authorized Service closer to my house (I have some problems with quemdora of DVDs on my Mac), and finally we went to the cinema.

He finished the film and as we left the theater, passing through the theater and I remember a work whose book has long wanted to buy “The Pillow Man” (an excellent thriller), so I take note in the Pocket Informant , I see that I have another appointment I say goodbye to my friends and I embark on the house of another friend with whom I have a meeting. Once at home, I transfer some Word documents and Excel via the wireless signal from your home to Air Sharing and I read some more blogs in NetNewsWire while reviewing documents.

After the meeting, we chatted a bit and go. Time to walk with a little music. The Arcade Fire, Beck and Chairlift sound great, but it is too late so I took another taxi. Japanese study so take a taxi to review some verbs Kanji and Japanese Kanji Flip and Flip Japanese respectively, and then some concepts ” Japanese “, an excellent Japanese dictionary.

I get home, I check and edit my appointments and tasks in the morning (again in Pocket Informant ) and I remember making a transfer to my brother. I can use my Macbook but not easy for me to do it from my iPod so I send the transfer from there. I take to buy Blindness (Saramago) on Amazon and confirm the appointment with the Agent Apple Authorized Service within two days.

How do you manage to do all these things with a single device, not including the iPhone-and at the same time pass so well? And without even worrying about the battery! Japanese dictionaries, databases, whole language, read and download documents, watch videos on YouTube, check my email and play Rolando (excellent game by the way). Not to mention the Contacts, Notes and the excellent support that Pocket Informant and that gives me almost by itself is a Personal Assistant. All this with an iPod.

One of the best I’ve used Personal Organizers

I’ve always liked the PDA’s, I had a couple (Windows Mobile) and at the time I have been fond of both. But the fact that an iPod can do most things more important than a PDA is just incredible. And the iPod is faster, sharper, more reliable and is even starting to have very good games. And compared to a PDA is also cheaper.

As I wrote above, I’ve had PDAs before and am well aware of the limitations of the iPod Touch against them (many of which will be resolved with the release of iPhone OS 3.0). But for what I need and for what I do is almost perfect. Sure, I have the demands of a senior or an expert in systems and technology, but perhaps that’s what Apple got (and probably “accidentally wanting”), a PDA for the user “average”, a PDA for “The rest of us.”

It is difficult to conclude this small article without going into some kind of cliche, but there is no other way to describe the potential here. Whoever bought an iPod Touch and see beyond what most made with one of them has the opportunity to find a bit of whatever they like. Sure, the iPod Touch / iPhone have become a tour-de-force for anyone even slightly interested in technology, but not only for themselves, here is a bit of everything for us all.
