Great smartphone of 2015: Samsung Galaxy S6

For years, customers have been asking Samsung to give its flagship product a metal body and a sleeker look. They’ve also wanted some of the designers to go in with a broom and sweep away a lot of the extra apps that come with the phone.

The good news is that the Samsung Galaxy S6 is answering all those questions — and then some.

Showcased earlier this year and due out in April, the Galaxy S6 features a new smooth casing that blends glass and a new matte-styled metal body together on the sides. There’s also an upgraded fingerprint reader for better security. And, for those snap-happy customers, the Korean electronics company placed a camera shortcut key on the body.

The bad news is that the Galaxy S6 contains many of the same features that the iPhone has included for the last few years, one of which is a permanent battery instead of a removable one. The design also looks eerily similar to the iPhone and may leave some of the more hardcore enthusiasts feeling cheated.

However, the Korean company opted to go with the Exynos processor to help keep the design slim. Part of that was to allow for the new wireless charging system that the company installed for this year’s phone.

Of course, that slimmer design meant designers had to make some sacrifices. Part of those included leaving out the microSD cards. Instead, the S6 will include dedicated memory sizes of 32, 64, and 128GB. Despite these decisions, the phone’s upgrades in memory, storage, and processing lead to a shorter battery life than its predecessor.

However, in sticking with its competition with Apple and Apple’s mobile payments system, the company introduced with its Samsung Pay option. Last year, Apple’s mobile payments really took off, and companies that allowed the payment options at their stores saw a significant increase in sales. Not wanting to miss out on potential revenue, they struck partnerships ahead of the release of its Samsung Pay feature.
Along with those features, the new Android 5.0 operating system and other upgrades to the Android apps and functions on the phone (such as cameras, maps, and voice commands), have created a much smoother operating experience for the user. The only question that remains now is whether or not the Samsung Galaxy S6 minus the removable battery and the slots for microSD cards will be enough to keep grabbing some of the share of smartphone users away from the iPhone.
